BLOOD SHANTI & THE SHANTI-ITES

 CAT NO:ABA LP/CD 006

This long awaited new album from Blood Shanti has finally been released. (Hmmm, I am sure That I have said that before!)

Artists are strange beings. They are never truly satisfied with their work and always feel that they can improve on it. I feel that most of the time they are 'guilding the lilly'.
Hendricks thought that he couldn't sing and so compensated with the most elaborate guitar work ever laid down by an artist. (This is in my opinion. Any other opinions duly accepted.)
True, Hendrick was not a singer, but he was a vocalist, and his vocals suited his music to a T. (Bob Dylan anyone?)

So it is with Blood Shanti. He is a vocalist and musician of the highest order, who presents his music and lyrics in a 'Roots & Culture' style like no one else.

His vocals have a way of moving the soul and stirring images in the mind as it weaves its way through and around his music, and as a top class musician who has worked and is still working with some of the great Reggae/Soul and R&B vocalists, he has learnt from their vocal delivery and he uses his voice to great effect, just like another instrument. For in effect that is what a vocal is.

When you hear a Blood Shanti tune, you know immediately it is Blood Shanti. They have a musical signature that sets them apart. These are not created in someone's bedroom on a computer using samples and a click track. These are crafted pieces of music, using real musicians, playing real instruments. Time, effort, blood, sweat and tears have gone into their construction and it shows.

So that my good friends is why this release has been so long in coming.

Check out 'Rise Up' a stirring piece of militant steppers with a (bang on) vocal accompaniment which is delivered in an articulate and gentle manner. This may sound like an unusual blend of styles, but this tune had the diverse crowd at Notting Hill Carnival 2007 rocking and skanking all over the place or 'What a Gwan' with its close coupled harmonies and a bass line to resonate your soul.

This is going to sound like an odd statement to make, but bear with me. Bloods tunes have nursery rythme quality, what they used to called back in the Tin Pan Alley days, 'The Old Grey Whistle Test'. This means that people can sing along to the tune after only hearing it once.
This was borne out earlier this year when Aba Shanti-I played 'The Garance Festival' in Paris and at the close of the session when we had to finish the crowd asked for one more tune and requested a Blood Shanti track. The authorities would not allow us to play past the curfew, so Aba asked the crowd to sing the track they wanted and word perfect and in time they sung 'Father Gives Life'.
