The session at 'The Scala'
finished at 0600.
11:00 I was bleary eyed and tired as I made my way to Heathrow
to catch the 15:25 plane to Munich.
It takes 2 hours from where I live to get to Heathrow by public
transport.
12:10 I called Aba to find out if he had left his home yet. The
call went to voice mail, so I sent a text.
We were going to Munich to do a session with Dandelion Sound.
They had been trying for a long time to get us to come and play.
But our schedule and theirs were always at odds with each other.
13:05 I arrived at Heathrow and texted Aba again.
13:10 I received a text from Aba to say he was 5 stations away
from the airport.
13:30 Aba arrives at the check in desk. I had made the good move
of checking in on line, so all we had to do was drop off the bags.
We were travelling with a schedule airline and they will only
let you check in on line 23 hours before the flight. The budget
airlines let you check in on line days or weeks before.
13:30 Bags deposited, we head for security.
13:45 We clear security with no stress.
14:45 As we were travelling on a scheduled airline and had allocated
seats the 'headless chicken dash' so prevalent with those 'Corsairs
of Ariel Conveyance', to get on the plane was not in evidence.
Uneventful flight to Munich. I closed my eyes but did not sleep
all the way there.
18:30 On arrival at Munich the transition through immigration
and customs was unstressed.
The only thing which was a surprised was the weather. We had left
a reasonably warm and sunny London to be faced on arrival in Munich
with torrential rain, (Wash I, Wash I. Sing Shandi-I, sing!).
We were met by Sebastian
(Ical's brother) and a next bredrin. We were escorted to their
car and driven the short distance to the venue.
The location of the venue surprised me as it was in the middle
of a shopping estate, sandwiched (no pun intended) just behind
two takeaway food joints, a 'Burger King' and a 'Subway'.
"What time does the session start" I asked Sebastian?
He confirms that the session starts at 22:00.
This would mean that the patrons of these takeaways would be getting
more than fries with their meals, a hefty dose of 'Roots &
Culture'. I suppose the vibration might help with their digestion,
all that gut shaking bass and ting.
We entered the venue
to the throes of 'Nyah Bingi' drumming and chanting coming from
the far end of the dimly lit hall, where the speakers were located.
I remarked to Aba that it is a long time since I have heard a
sound system play strict 'Nyah Bingi', but I was wrong. As we
made our way further into the hall I noticed that even though
the sound was set up, no record or cd was being played. In looking
further there was a group of about 5 people banging drums and
chanting. Strictly 'Groundation' inna de area, with incense ah
bun and chanting and drums resounding.
It took me back to the early to mid 70's when as a yout I would
end up, after a night 'up west', at St Agnes Place, Kennington
London (12 Tribe HQ) basement at 0400 in the morning. Where I
would sit in and play a little guitar or drum as they did their
Friday sundown to Saturday sun up, 'Ises'. Also termed 'Groundation'.
Nuff musician and artiste would pass through when they were in
town, Bob Marley, D.E. B, Ranking Dread, Mighty Diamonds, Heptones,
Welton, Bingi Bunny, and a hole heap more. It was a gathering
place and people gathered, plus the sistren did a wicked soursap
or carrot juice to help you wash down the fried fish and dumpling.
Yeh man dem was a different time and 'unity inna de community'
was the cry. Even though the wicked was seriously down pressing
man and man, woman and woman and trying to prevent the children
from thriving; guns, crack & cocaine had not and could not
get a foot hold inna the UK Diaspora, and Roots & Culture
music was tearing down de place.
Aba and I watched and listened in silence, occasionally looking
at one another and nodding approval at the steady riddims be created
as the assembled went through their supplications. Out of Raspects,
I did not take any photos of this. It would have spoilt the vibes.
After the assembled had finished their 'Ises', I then took some
pictures of the venue interior, what with its hand painted canvas
pictures. One of them was of Aba and the artist who painted it
came later on that evening and presented it to Aba.
Aba commences his sound check as I wandered around the hall listening
to the sound from various locations.
Bredda Ical who had designed the system had built some long throw
boxes and the bass sound that was rolling out of them was serious.
He had separate long throw horns and tweeters on stands, either
side of the stack.
I looked over to Aba and nodded. Yup this will do nicely.
20:20 Sound check finished we left the venue with Sebastian and
were taken to his home for some food and relaxation before the
night's session. The rain was still falling.
On entering his home
we were greeted by his wife and associated bredrins who had travelled
from all over Switzerland to take in this session. His home was
a cultural oasis with African masks and artwork adorning the walls.
We were escorted to the kitchen where a meal had been prepared
for us. We all settled down to partake of the food and drink.
We indulged in some serious conversation as we ate in regards
how they had come to build a sound system in the first place and
their inspiration in doing so, the state of the world and the
people residing within it. You know the usual lightweight dinner
conversation.
21:40 The meal over, Aba retired to get some sleep and the assembled
and I went and sat in the living room and continued our conversation.
At this juncture both Aba and I have had no meaningful portion
of sleep for over 2 days. Bwoy it ruff pan de road.
23:30 I wake Aba as we are due to start our session at midnight.
23:50 We make the very short car journey to the venue. It is still
raining.
00:00 We arrive at the
venue's rear door and Sebastian goes round to the front entrance
to gain access.
There are a few people milling around at the rear of the venue.
The sound from inside is rattling up the building.
The rear doors are opened and a rush of hot air hits us. The place
inside is packed with people.
We negotiated our way through the throng and to the control tower.
Just a point; in sound check the turntable had been set so high
that Aba had to stand on tip toe to put the needle on the record.
That was fine for Ical as he is quite tall, but Aba as the saying
goes is 'little bit'. So we had asked for the turntable to be
lowered to make it easier for him to play.
We greet the sound crew and Aba prepares to start the night's
session.
00:10 Aba is introduced to the crowd by Bredda Ical and a great
roar goes up. The session then starts.
The already large crowd gets more plentiful over the next half
an hour. The place was goat, sorry I mean ram!
The heat inna de place caused by the dancing massive soon required
me to reach for some water to quench my thirst and re-hydrate.
Those that know me will find that strange as I normally reach
for a fizzy drink, that shows how HOT is was.
Aba started with a selection of classic Roots tunes and then over
the course of the next four and a half hours migrated to some
serious steppers. The crowd loved it. Not so much the local constabulary,
who arrived on more than one occasion to ask for the music to
be turned down.
04:45 Aba signs off with the old and then the new cut of Prince
Alla's 'Rastafari'.
05:00 We leave the venue and head back to Sebastian's home to
get some rest. The night had been a tremendous success. The promoter
was happy, the people were happy and Aba was dripping in perspiration
after delivering a truly wicked set.
Raspects to Dandelion Sound System, Sebastian & Wife, Ical
and the crew. Jah Roc who had come to pick up the new release
by Emmanuel Joseph on behalf of Sister Nicole, Jah Roots &
Crew from Switzerland. Sister Anna, Treasure Irie, and to all
